Lu Wei’s five-point championship lead makes Shanghai the focal point of the GT World Challenge Asia finale. The 19-car field includes Laurin Heinrich’s return to Lu’s No. 11 Porsche, giving the points leader back a factory driver for the two one-hour races that will settle the season’s titles.
The final round runs Oct. 30-Nov. 1 at Shanghai, the championship’s first visit to China’s leading international circuit since 2024. The event had been scheduled earlier in the year before being shifted to the finale slot. Its car entry list matches the one used at the Beijing street circuit earlier this month, though several pairings have changed.
Heinrich returns as Lu’s closest rival closes in
Heinrich, a Porsche factory driver, rejoins Lu in Origine Motorsport’s No. 11 911 GT3 R Evo for his third appearance of the season. He missed Beijing, where Loek Hartog filled the seat. Hartog stays in the series for Shanghai, joining Anthony Liu in Phantom Global Racing’s Porsche after the two previously raced together at Mandalika.
Lu arrives after a difficult but still productive Beijing round: a retirement from one race and second place in the other. His five-point advantage over Absolute Racing’s No. 911 Porsche pairing of Huang Ruohan and Alessandro Ghiretti leaves little margin for error. Ghiretti and Huang won the second Beijing race, putting them in position to pressure Lu across the finale.
There are 50 points available, so the standings leave room for other contenders to get involved. Audi Sport Asia teammates Yu Kuai and Cheng Congfu are 26 points behind Lu and need a strong result across both races. Phantom Global’s Liu is 28 points back, while Harmony Racing’s Liu Kaishun trails by 29. With the field unchanged in size, driver execution and the new pairings will matter alongside outright pace.
Several Porsche and BMW lineups change
Absolute Racing’s No. 918 Porsche will have a third completely new driver pairing in three rounds. Alessio Picariello, who partnered Lu at Origine earlier in the season, now teams up with British GT regular Kevin Tse. That pairing adds another variable to a Porsche contingent with several drivers moving between teams and teammates as the calendar reaches its final event.
Team KRC’s No. 89 BMW M4 GT3 EVO gains BMW works driver Tim Tramnitz alongside “Tony” Ruan Cunfan. Craft-Bamboo Racing also brings in a new face: Melvin Moh will share its Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo with Liang Jiatong. The source gives no further details about how either new combination will affect race strategy, so their Shanghai performances will provide the first direct measure of how quickly they work together.
Harmony Racing’s Ferrari lineup also returns to its regular arrangement. Chen Weian is back alongside Liu Kaishun after missing Beijing, where SUPER GT driver Takuro Shinohara deputized. In the Porsche field, Hartog’s move to Phantom Global pairs him again with Liu, while Heinrich’s return restores the Origine combination that had been absent at the previous round.
Hartog’s Shanghai return also brings him back to the circuit where he helped Ollie Millroy after a major China GT Championship crash earlier this year. The earlier incident and Hartog’s actions were reported here.
Class battles add more pressure to the finale
The overall title is only one of several standings still to be decided. In Silver Cup, Yu and Cheng hold a seven-point lead over Liu Kaishun. Their overall deficit means they face a demanding weekend if they are to contend for both honors, while Liu has a direct chance to close the class gap.
Silver-Am is tighter still: Team KRC BMW drivers Maxime Oosten and Brian Lee lead Liang Jiatong by ten points. Liang has a second chance to influence the standings through his Craft-Bamboo Mercedes-AMG pairing with Moh, making his Shanghai weekend relevant to more than one title fight.
In Am, Climax Racing’s Mercedes-AMG teammates Setiawan Santoso and Zhou Bihuang have a 12-point cushion over Origine Porsche drivers Liu Hangcheng and Wang Zhongwei. That advantage gives the Climax pairing room to manage the weekend, but with two races remaining, the challenger still has points to chase.
Shanghai schedule
A paid test is scheduled for Friday morning, followed by first practice and pre-qualifying. Qualifying takes place on Saturday morning. The opening one-hour race is set for Saturday at 12:50 p.m. local time, listed as 12:50 a.m. EST. The finale follows Sunday at 1:05 p.m. local time, or 12:05 a.m. ET.
The entry list offers continuity in the number of cars but a different set of driver combinations for the decisive weekend. Lu’s five-point edge, the returning Heinrich pairing and three close class contests make Shanghai a weekend where both race results and consistency can reshape the standings.
